Ballyhoura Bears

Walking Club

The Official Opening of the new Mealagh Valley Section of the Sheeps Head Walking Route will be held on Sunday 25th April. This new section is part of a link route which joins the Sheeps Head Way to the Beara Way, enabling walkers to hike cross-country from Allihies to Kilcrohane.

As part of the opening, we will be holding guided walks on sections of the route of varying difficulty, including;

• A 4½ hour walk over Mullaghmesha with outstanding views of the Cork coastline and Kerry mountains (starting at Lake Bofin and ending at Barnafulladh). The views aren’t the only part of this walk that will be breathtaking!

• A shorter 3 hour version of the above walk (starting at Coomanore South instead of Lake Bofin), but still including a stiff hike over Mullaghmesha, which is 600m high.

• A woodland walk for families with children with some bug-hunting (Starting at Barnagowlanes, with the option of walking back to the Community Hall on a 4 mile route along the road. If the weather picks up, parts of the broadleaf woodland should be carpeted with bluebells at this time of the year.

All walkers are asked to meet at the Mealagh Valley Community Hall at 10.30am from where busses will be available to start points along the route.

It would help our transport arrangements if we can have an indication of numbers and also a phone number in case we have to cancel because of the weather. If you are coming, please email us with your contact details, and an idea of how many people might come.

There will be tea and refreshments back at the Community Hall after the walks, and the official opening will be held at 3.00pm

Events are free on the day, but we would appreciate donations towards the cost of refreshments etc.

The Community Hall can be found as the yellow point on the map by clicking here

Many thanks, Quentin (Secretary) - 027 52773
