IMPORTANT NOTICE: Castlepook Windfarm

IMPORTANT NOTICE

ESB Wind Development Limited in conjunction with Coillte Teoranta will be hosting a Public Information Day at
Doneraile Community Hall, Co. Cork on Thursday August 19th between the hours of 3pm and 8pm. Members of the
public are invited to attend where information will be available regarding the proposed wind farm in the townland
of Castlepook North, Carker North, Ballyhoura, Co.Cork. The proposed wind farm will potentially generate enough
electricity to power over 20,000 homes. ESB International are preparing the Environmental Impact Statement as
well as the planning application for the proposal. Representatives from ESB Wind Development Limited and Coillte
Teoranta will be present to provide information and answer any queries on the proposed wind farm.

This proposed development will impact on walkers. We are reliably informed that a similar proposition some years
ago failed because of the potential impact on the hen harrier. While the hen will be produced again this year, the
impact on walking in the area( This is Canon Sheehan Way Country) must be highlighted on behalf of the Club.
Robin Lee and Cal McCarthy will be attending on behalf of the Club. Members willing to assist in the preparation of
a written submission are asked to contact Cal or Robin.

Hi Hugh,
I don't know the specifics on the proposed development. I just posted the notice on behalf of the club. Speaking in a personal capacity, I can appreciate your point. We need to develop cleaner, renewable energy sources which can also provide much need employment in these recessionary times. I'd imagine the main threat posted to birds and wildlife is when the diggers and other heavy equipment come into install the turbines. The wingspan on the windmills is massive (about as long as a 747) so they need a pretty serious foundation to keep them in place. This kind of construction probably can't be done without having some impact on the environment. Again, this is just my opinion but I'll email you Liz Enright's (Club Secretary) contact details if you want to follow this up with her. I'm sure Liz will have a clearer idea on what Robin and Cal's position is on this development.

Cheers,
John

Hi John,
I don't know when you're going to get this! But what's happening?
Is the wind farm going ahead? I'd have definitely been there, only I didn't know about it.

I find myself torn between wanting this fantastic way of generating green energy for the planet, but also thinking it could be a tragedy if the vulnerable Hen Harrier & Red Kite projects could be jeopardised by something which has similar overall green interests at heart.
It also probably means that ALL wild birds are threatened by wind farms EVERYWHERE. I'd never even thought of that. Is it that they fly into the rotors or what?
There's always something.
Needless to say as well, our economy, both local & national *badly* need this move towards indigenous power and self sufficiency.
Bit of a major dilemma...for people like me who would be vying strongly for both projects and interests independently.
Cheers.
