Thursday August 5th
The Thursday evening walk was led this week by Cal McCarthy along his favourite stomping ground of Glenanaar. Is there anywhere more beautiful and peaceful then Glenanaar and the lovely shaded walk up the valley alongside the Aar river? Canon Sheehan would agree that there is not. At this time of year the tree canopy is lush and the summer growth plentiful. The mountain ash trees are resplendent with bunches of red berries. The verges are line…

Thursday July 29th
The Thursday evening walks continue in popularity. Led by Declan Clancy the walk started from the Lacca and headed down the Goat’s Path into Greenwood. A turn through the Pinch onto Seefin took the group to the heights and a compelling view of the Glen of Aherlow nestling beneath the shadowed slopes of the Galtys. A short descent to the car park brought a fine evening’s walk to a contented co…

We really are having a great season of walking right now – Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. These are the scheduled walks. They do not take into account all the other walking activities that are undertaken by our members, whether it is on behalf of charitable causes or preparation for “away” trips or walks that are arranged by members to accommodate their own needs and schedules. Added to this we have members in Tanzania presently climbing Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa – and anot…

Rain or shine our walks keep going ahead. Thursday evening at Lisvarrinane was the worst affected by the rain, but despite this the numbers turned up. Joan Caulfield led us on a trek on Slievenamuk, and if we did not get the views that this beautiful area can deliver on a finer day, we still had a pleasant walk through the woods. This is familiar stomping ground for Joan; you can easily tell once she delivers soupcons of her immense knowledge of neighbourhood. When you are dressed for the condit…

Once again we had five walks scheduled on our calendar last week. However Thursday and Saturday turned out to be very wet and this inevitably resulted in reduced numbers turning up for these walks.
Jim Flynn took charge of the Thursday evening walk from Ballinvreena. The evening was damp and the views were restricted, but the spirits of those that turned up were not dampened. As usual Jim sprinkled this walk with nuggets of his knowledge of the locality. This is one of the beauties of the Thurs…

These are busy times for the Bears. Over the past week we held no fewer than five Club walks all of which were well attended. Added to this others in the Club are doing their own walks preparing their fitness levels for the upcoming trips abroad.
Declan Clancy led a group of twenty five walkers from Ballinaboola on Thursday. The number that turned up is evidence of the popularity of this location for walking and the competency of Declan to get the best out of a walk. We were belssed, again, wit…

The popularity of walking as a pastime is becoming more evident now that the fine weather has insisted on staying with us. Mary Murphy’s walk to Slievereagh on the longest day of the year is an example. Upwards of one hundred walkers assembled at Glenbrohane Church on 21st June to make the ascent to the mast on Slievereagh and to sample there the delights of the surrounding countryside. This walk compliments the same walk that takes place on the shortest day of the year. One could hardly believe…

Last Thursday evening’s walk took on something of a change from our regular Thursday evening walks. Ben O’Sullivan decided to lead a walk from Kilmallock Church on a loop to Tankardstown and Knocksouna returning to the start via Glenfield. There was a distinct historical flavour to this imaginative route – the site of the mediaeval church of Naomh Mocheallóg on Kilmallock Hill, the grave of J K Bracken at Tankardstown, one of the founder members of the G A A and father of Brendan Bracken the fou…

The Thursday evening walk last week took us on to Seefin from the Lacca Car Park on an indifferent evening for viewing. Nonetheless we had an invigorating climb with plenty of chat going on. Willie O’Rourke led us on our route flawlessly. All arrived back to their cars well satisfied with their evening out.
Saturday saw the beginners walk taking to Glenanaar in the hope that the bluebells would b in full bloom. Nineteen of us headed off in good conditions. There had…

The Bears are back to their normal routine now that the Ballyhoura International Walking Festival has been successfully concluded.
We had five walks altogether last week commencing with the Thursday evening walk from Glenroe led by Bridget Hennessy. These walks are as popular as ever and provide a nice link between each weekend walk. They are given to leisurely walking with plenty of chat. They are ideal for a midweek “distress”. Glenroe and its environs is the ideal location for such luxury.…

With the Ballyhoura International Walking Festival just around the corner – the May Bank Holiday weekend – the preparations for it are going “full steam ahead”. This involves walking out the routes that will be covered during the Festival to ensure that everything is safe and at the ready for our visitors. Accordingly all of the club walks were on the Ballyhouras last weekend covering the entire expanse of the range from Ballinaboola across to Glenroe. Added to this ther…

After the exigencies of our successful away trip to Donegal over the Easter weekend, we stayed closer to home last Saturday and Sunday.
Our increasingly popular “beginners walks” assembled again at Ardpatrick Church on Saturday and this time we headed for Coolfree mountain. Newcomers and regulars had a smashing walk around the circumference of this little knuckle of the Ballyhouras. The weather was perfect; the chat and banter kept apace with the walking.
At the opposite en…

After several months in the planning we completed another successful annual weekend away last weekend. The club has been in the habit of making trips away to Wales, England and Scotland over the Easter weekend in recent years, but this year, on the inspiration of Eugene Stephens our Social Secretary, we turned our attentions towards Donegal and its renowned rugged terrain. What a choice it turned out to be. Fifty of our members took off for the northern County at various tim…

The year is slipping on, and we are on the cusp of the bright evenings. For us this spells walks on further away ranges that endure for a bit longer than we have been used to since the time changed in October last.
Pat Lombard led a fantastic “A” walk on to Mangerton on Sunday last. Assembling his charges at Killarney in advance, he led us by car out to the Torc Waterfall Upper Car Park. There we donned the appropriate gear for the beautiful conditions that obtained, and st…

This Sunday saw further preparations being made for this year’s festival with our scheduled A and B walks both leaving from Lisvarrinane Village. Traditionally Sunday walks during the May Bank Holiday Festival Weekend take place in the Galtee range and this year is no different with one exception, we will have a total of four walks on the Sunday. The A high level Walk is a closely gu
